pacific northwest

NPR recently posted a beautiful set of images taken in the Pacific Northwest. They're slides taken by Asahel Curtis for the Washington state Department of Conservation and Development in the 1920's. Check out more over here, and a few more of my favorites after the jump. This only makes my urge to travel there greater.

I thought this was a fun little challenge. There are various levels where you have to select the correct corresponding shade(s). Sometimes it's a bit harder than it looks. Other times it's an easy victory, and those are always nice. Give it a shot yourself here. 

iconatomy

These are pretty amazing collages by George Chamoun, and are part of a digital mashup series called Iconatomy. The Clooney --> Grant, and Portman --> Hepburn ones are especially seamless. I can't even imagine how long it took to pair these images up.

I actually made this a while back as part of my Deep Bullshit series. I don't think I ever posted it and today seemed like a good day for some sap.

new legs, nice photos

The other day I stumbled upon this photo and favorited it. It's hilarious to me, and I imagine a parade of people getting turned away as they try to hang out in some lot and sparr with each other.

The photo is by someone that goes by "New Legs" on Flickr. I wish I knew their real name, or more about their identity in general, especially because upon my return to their photostream I really got lost in it. There are some really fantastic images -- a nice mixed bag of humor, oddities, softness, and seclusion. After the jump are several of my favorites. Check out his/her photos here.

drink beer & make stuff

All I have to say about this illustration from designer Dan Gneiding is... WORD. This is his contribution to  To Resolve Project. You can see more of Dan's work here (I want to curl up on that background btw), as well as the rest of TRP here (there's a whole lot of talent on display over there).  

sam falconer

These are pretty fun and kooky illustrations by UK artist Sam Falconer. Maybe it's the noses by their a bit Baldessari no?

first impressions on brand marks

This video is pretty adorable, but it's also interesting to hear this 5 year old's take on brands... what she recognizes, and what she doesn't (which leads to hilarity). Logos and brand identity are fascinating to me, however sometimes it's kind of scary to see how they can collectively penetrate our minds without us even realizing it.

tabitha soren

Are you in your 30's? Did you "Choose or Lose"? Then you probably remember MTV news correspondent Tabitha Soren. Well, what do you know... sometime in the last 20 years she made a career transition into photography (AND married that guy that wrote Moneyball). She's got an impressive portfolio, and I particularly like her Uprooted series, which these photos are a part of. Check out more after the jump and on her site.

Q: What makes me happier than making lists? 

A: Finding a website full of lists by other people.

Here's an interesting one, from Sid (of the Sex Pistols -- you know, just in case you assumed it was Sid of American wrestling fame) to the doomed apple of his eye, Nancy. Kinda raunchy... yeah. Kind sweet... yeah that too. And is that blood? Not sure. Don't want to know.

color of the year

I don't know how I almost forgot about posting this -- after all, it's been a tradition since 2008. For those of you that care about the Pantone color of the Year, this is probably old news. For those that don't, well you're probably not even reading this. But here I go anyway.

So this is it -- Tangerine Tango. I'm a bit iffy on orange. Maybe it's the sea of Longhorns around me, or maybe it feels too Halloweeny outside of the holiday. However, contrary to many blogs out there that have assembled collections of orange things you should love, there are in fact shades of orange. I know, shocking. Someone might want to pass the word around. That said, and in spite of living in U.T. country, I think I like tihs version of orange. Could be because, and I quote Pantone, it's "exotic, but in a very friendly, non-threatening way". That IS what I look for in a good color. 2012 is gonna be good.
