Leon Borensztien, how I adore thee. His portraits, for the most part, I've speculated are either capturing the awkwardness between poses, or the overall oddness of awkward people. I think I prefer to believe it's the latter and all of these folks lived in one sad, yet groovy small town, back in 1982.

summer weather

I'm 100% in love with this series by Michael Jang. Summer Weather documented folks in the 80's as they tried out to become weather reporters, and was recently rediscovered by the photographer. It's one hell of a time capsule, and it's just been released in book form. I wonder how they all fared, especially Miss Intensity in photo #1 (who strangely reminds me of a teacher I once had, and / or the lost member of Stryper that not only sang rock'n hymns, but surely also developed synchronized hair dancing).

Cinemagraphs

I don't know what hocus pocus brings these images to life, and it's probably better that way. Kevin Burg and Jamie Beck are the mad scientists behind Cinemagraphs. Their work ranges in theme, from food / fashion / lifestyle. My favorite is the NYC city series. There is a calm eeriness throughout, as if the world is on the brink of abandonment and we're on the fringes witnessing it. View more here.

One of these days I will tire of puns, and it will be a joyful day for everyone that knows me. In the mean time I gift you all with one more to suffer through. And as another extension of bidding adieu to summer, I present images from my sunny last hurrah. Have a great extended weekend!

instagram

I mentioned that I finally got caught up in Instagram. Well, maybe not caught up but I'm definitely enjoying the app, and was really excited when it finally came to Android. I think what limits my usage is the lack of diversity in my life. I apparently only work, sleep, go out to eat, sit at a computer, watch movies, and swim. Ok, now that I see that in writing, I recognize that my daily calendar isn't necessarily a wasteland. I DO do things. And I should take more pictures. Noted, self. pacific northwest

NPR recently posted a beautiful set of images taken in the Pacific Northwest. They're slides taken by Asahel Curtis for the Washington state Department of Conservation and Development in the 1920's. Check out more over here, and a few more of my favorites after the jump. This only makes my urge to travel there greater.

new legs, nice photos

The other day I stumbled upon this photo and favorited it. It's hilarious to me, and I imagine a parade of people getting turned away as they try to hang out in some lot and sparr with each other.

The photo is by someone that goes by "New Legs" on Flickr. I wish I knew their real name, or more about their identity in general, especially because upon my return to their photostream I really got lost in it. There are some really fantastic images -- a nice mixed bag of humor, oddities, softness, and seclusion. After the jump are several of my favorites. Check out his/her photos here.

tabitha soren

Are you in your 30's? Did you "Choose or Lose"? Then you probably remember MTV news correspondent Tabitha Soren. Well, what do you know... sometime in the last 20 years she made a career transition into photography (AND married that guy that wrote Moneyball). She's got an impressive portfolio, and I particularly like her Uprooted series, which these photos are a part of. Check out more after the jump and on her site.

hidden mothers

I've seen pictures like this countless times, so I'm not sure why it never occurred to me what was going on. I'd like to think I'm an observant person, but clearly not. This group -- Hidden Mothers -- on Flickr has a great collection of images with, well, hidden mothers (and sometimes fathers). My favorites are the ones that essentially are shapes holding a baby, or floating infants. They're creepy in some cases, but mostly comical -- a study in camouflage posing.

Maybe it's because I just watched Inception again, but this series "Twisted" by Nicholas Sitton reminds me a lot of that topsy turvy dream world. See more of the set here.

This feels like the millionth post I've done on Missy Prince, but come on, this photo is awesome (as they always are). Her photos never let me down. You can view her Flickr stream here. good medicine: abandoned televisions

I know I'm heavily swayed by equal love for TV and photography, but I think even without that I'd be smitten by this series by Alex Beker. In his words:

Abandoned Televisions triggers emotions arising from our memories of popular TV culture. Street photography captures television sets left for dead because they are old, broken or soon to be replaced by more modern technology.
They are resuscitated by incorporating a visual moment from a show broadcast when that television set was alive.

Suddenly, a discarded black box dying on a sidewalk comes back to life, and so do we - to our past life. In an instant, we identify the show, its characters and maybe even a particular episode, and we are rejuvenated by the memory.
We travel back to our younger years, recalling the house we used to live in,
the room where the television set was, the chair we sat in to watch, the smells of our house, and those we watched the show with.
A snapshot of popular culture tells a piece of our own personal story.
