many many thanks

I've come out of accidental retirement with a cliched piece of "art". I've missed you blog, and have no-one but myself to blame. If one were to look at my posts they'd think not much has happened this year. In some ways that's true (hello, frequent stops by Netflix), but it has not been without its peaks and valley's.

Here I am now, and life is good. Thanksgiving seemed like the perfect time to embrace that reality. I sincerely hope that regardless of the holiday that everyone is warm, safe, has a full belly and people around that they love and love them back.

oh my stars and stripes

Happy 4th of July! Ingredients for a successful holiday: no shoes, this shirt, an assortment of meats, pals, and things that go boom / sparkle in the night.

2012 - nuff said

2012 - nuff said

I've mentioned this before but I'll say it again -- I really don't do resolutions. Refraining goes against every OCD list-making tendency I have, I know.  I think this is because with such specificity I open myself to failure and there's no real chance of immediacy in checking things off. "Get in shape" getting scratched off (maybe) 6 months down the line is far less gratifying than "go to the post office", which can be done that day. When it comes to list making I'm in it for the quick thrills.

And when it comes to actual goals is there really any new territory to cover? I can either jot down for the millionth time "stop eating things that slowly kill you", or come up with something new like "learn how to Benjamin Button yourself". Ugh, so it's tiring or implausible. Last year I made an attempt at resolutions by casting a very wide net. I'm pretty sure that there were some misses even with that generous vagueness. So this year I'm thinking it's time to really get broad, leaving a definitive opening for accomplishment and self-improvement. If this doesn't work maybe next year I'll resort to "breath and stuff".

happy new year!

Hope everyone is having starting 2011 off right and enjoying this New Year's Day. I'm feeling a little like the photo above, but otherwise in great spirits. My enthusiasm for eggnog has definitely waned since some festivities last night; today will consist of a little work, a lot of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and not much else.

guide to a better year

No resolutions for me this year; I don't need to open that door to possible failures, with my old enemy guilt waiting to meet me, arms open wide. At the same time who doesn't love the feeling of a clean slate or having a reason to keep striving for a better/happier life... so I can't entirely resist. Here is my personal guide to having a great 2011.

gobble gobble

Recovering Lazyholic is often a place for some "woe is me" silly angst but I'm going to take today to be a little cheesy and a lot sincere when I say that aside from the things I find to bitch about I'm truly thankful and happy to have the things I have. I'm also apparently thankful for run-on sentences.

I'm so very glad and feel blessed to have the friendships and loved ones that are in my life. And even if I can't eat well all the time, I eat. And I have a roof over my head. Can't ask for much more.

I hope everyone has a nice holiday today, is warm, safe, healthy and with someone you love. Eat some food, and get lazy too if you can.

P.S. the above image is by Craig Clark as part of R29's 3rd annual "By a Show of Hands" hand turkey extravaganza.

happy 2010 and other stuff

Hello! It's been awhile... again. The holidays happened and the next thing I know I did not have the time or energy to devote to the blog. Then my computer got some nasty viruses. I doubt anyone has necessarily been clamoring for my return but here I am anyway. I'm not entirely sure where/how to jump back in, faced with ideas of changing the layout of my site or what I post. My head starts to hurt and I simply stay away when that happens. So I'm not sure yet what I want to do. Something tells me I won't be able to give it up, but if I am to continue I'd like to do it right and in a way that makes me happy. I'm probably over-thinking it and that generally gets me in trouble.

So stay tuned if you feel any weird devotion to Recovering Lazyholic. We shall see what happens.

I'd also like to take this time to thank folks that bought items from my shop over the holidays. I really appreciate it and hope you are happy with your purchases!

Last, I don't have any resolutions (much like last year, however I DID get a new phone and feel like I tried harder so mission accomplished) but I have some broad goals. For some reason with me it's all in the phrasing. I want to continue to try harder, to be better, to not let anyone down, and not let myself down. And I'd like to have an art show. Those of you with resolutions, good luck and may 2010 be your best year yet!

round trip

Another holiday down. My Thanksgiving was pretty darn great. There were no drive-ins this year unfortunately but spending time with my family brought a different sort of joy. Things I learned or was reminded of:

·Being called "that girl" works when it's out of the mouth of a 3 year old
·There is no such thing as too much sugar
·Memories never fade even when structures disappear
·My parents effortlessly and naturally make me feel that being me is just fine, and in fact sometimes great, simply by being themselves
·True story, chili petines are indeed hot and are like chewing a small piece of fire
·Taking photos is one of five things on the planet that make my tummy flip in a good way
·Readers Digest can spur interesting conversations
·Dog Fancy is strangely in circulation at my folk's house
·I come from a family of deaf people

There are probably some other things but this is the bulk of it. Definitely moments that I will savor.

need to want less: gluttony

This is what happens when you make something VERY quickly. No matter...

The holidays are well underway and whatever your stance, whether considering the origins, the corporate sponsorships, the overeating, or sporting events, there is some little good nugget to take from each one of them. Personally I know that I have shown a few chinks in my armor as of late, but in a continuing effort to ditch the wah brigade I am happier to think about the best parts of Thanksgiving. So much could be better, but SO much could be worse and I am thankful for everyone of those people, places, and things that make life worthwhile. I sincerely hope that each and every one of you has a great day today and are able to spend it with friends and/or family.

Happy Thanksgiving! Be back soon! And as always, thanks for stopping by!

Almost forgot... listen to this as you're gnawing on that turkey leg or scarfing some pie.

clowns + new year's = duh, naturally!

Awful Library Books continues to impress. I wholeheartedly believe there are more bad books than good in the universe, AND that it might not be our loss.

I am also sensing a repost come New Year's Day.

goodbye summer

Well Labor Day has come and gone, and so marks the end of summer. Kind of. It's still hot and without checking a calendar I wouldn't necessarily know that anything has changed, but I am happy to pretend/accept that Fall is just around the corner. This summer has seemed far less summery than seasons passed... more oppressive/little fun. Maybe if my summers were more like they used to be, as illustrated in the above schedule from my youth, I would have something to miss. Now, I'm ready for cool breezes, getting under blankets, falling leaves, and the faint smell of a fire and smoke from someone's chimney. Hopefully nostalgia will not disappoint this go 'round.

happy late earth day

I didn't post anything yesterday because I was busy enjoying Earth Day. Sadly my major contributions to saving the environment were dreaming of buying a new Honda hybrid and not flushing the toilet as often as most normal people do (oh, the joys of living alone).

I hope everyone else was more successful.

P.S. The image credit for the above goes to Mark Weaver who in my opinion is an AMAZING artist. See more of his work here.

happy 2009!

I was going to buck a habit of the last few years and come up with some New Year's resolutions this go 'round. I haven't made that kind of list in ages, which is shocking since I'm a compulsive list maker otherwise. I feel like I write the same thing over and over though, and all I'm left with is guilt and disappointment. So I'll simply state this is my resolution... Try Harder. Oh, and maybe buy a new phone.

Have a safe and happy New Year everyone!
