charles

Untitled

Here's a middle finger scenario.

I struggle to convey loss and hurt and in turn inadvertently make it about myself. Are there instructions for this? It sucks -- the world has one less awesome person. It needs to be known. You need to be told what you are maybe not aware of. Grief greets me at death and this is what comes next.

To say I feel lucky is a bit misleading. To use the word glad in any sense makes me seem insensitive. I am not happy. I am sad. A chunk of my childhood now feels dipped in bronze for posterity. The trajectory of a grown-up friendship has been dashed. Beyond me and my self-centeredness, someone that lived is gone.

But the suffering is over and this is where I find relief. I did get to share experiences that are mine and only mine, and for that I am grateful -- almost possessive. And I got to spend time in his hideaway, where photos and art and lush greenery and music lived. They blanketed me with revelations and insight. Imagining his full life comforted me, as did briefly being a part of it in that way.

I am the baby that sometimes put herself on an island. I can and do get lost in wishes and regret, but have to circle back to what experiences I did accrue.  I can only imagine how hard this must be for the rest of my family and his closest friends. I find solace and joy in their stories and hope those memories uplift them more than they cause pain.

Love you Charles. To echo your parting words to me, I WILL see you again. And you'll tell me a story matched with a sneer. And we'll laugh.

happy birthday!

Happy Birthday to Gene Hackman, one of unlaziest actors of our time, with a career of over 80 films spanning more than 4 decades. Many of his movies are at the top of my list of favorites, so I forgive you for this. I think today I'll pop in The Conversation and open up some Kirin Dry in your honor.

and then she saved - anna newell jones

Here's another item I've been hanging onto for too long. Anna Newell Jones and I met through Etsy. She's a super talented photographer that was kind enough to buy something from my shop (thank you again!). Now seems like the perfect time to introduce her with all this consumption talk. Anna started a blog/project this year called "And Then She Saved". In her own words:

My idea is to go on a spending fast for a year - spending money on necessities only- to see what happens, how much debt I can get out of and how much I can get into savings.

When I mentioned to a good friend that I was thinking about going on a spending fast for 2010 she sighed and said "Well, that doesn't sound very fun." Then, I told my husband what I was thinking about doing and he wasn't very excited about it either. He said "Great. No more fun. No more eating out. This is gonna suck."

I have to tell you, I feel the same way. Who would want to not get want they want? I'm the type that buys what she wants when she wants because I work hard and I feel like I deserve it. I know plenty of people that have the same feelings as I do about work and money and spending and not spending.

Inside my head I hear this loudly: "YOU DESERVE IT DARLING!" and truly, I believe that I do. I mean, I woke up early for goodness-sake! I did what was asked of me and I was even nice while doing it! I DESERVE that super cute trinket or hat or whatever from Etsy dammit! Besides, I work a full-time day job AND I run a full-time wedding photography business AND what else can I think of? I do a lot and my spending is justified... until it isn't anymore.

And.. that's where I am today... starting January 1st 2010 I'm gonna spend money on necessities only and I'm fully prepared for this to suck.

As a fellow wanter and I can totally identify with her; spending habits are hard to change. Take a look at her blog and really dig in. I'll bet you can relate to a lot of it too. And maybe say hello... I bet she'd like that. Oh, and maybe ask her about What Not to Wear.

i didn't recognize you without your brows

I am not as obsessed as I used to be but I have to confess that a good pair of eyebrows still does it for me. I am not a snob and will not shun you if you are poorly groomed, overgroomed or merely have unremarkable brows. A good pair will entrance me though. Am I freaking you out yet?

What Consumes Me recently posted an interesting link to a site that asked participants to identify fifty famous people in three different varieties -- as normal, without eyes, and without eyebrows. Interestingly people had a harder time recognizing the eyebrowless. Not sure I ever would have jumped to that conclusion but looking at some of the photos I can see how it could be tougher.

museum of broken relationships

The fact that such an institution exists only reaffirms that there is something, somewhere in the universe to cover any/every possible interest/outlet that a person could ever wish for.

Welcome to the Museum of Broken Relationships in Croatia!

The Museum of Broken Relationships is an art concept which proceeds from the assumption that objects possess integrated fields - ‘holograms’ of memories and emotions - and intends with its layout to create a space of ‘secure memory’ or ‘protected remembrance’ in order to preserve the material and nonmaterial heritage of broken relationships. Unlike the ‘destructive’ self-help instructions for recovery from failed loves, the Museum offers every individual the chance to overcome the emotional collapse through creation - by contributing to the Museum's collection. The individual gets rid of ‘controversial objects’, triggers of momentarily ‘undesirable’ emotions, by turning them into museum exhibits, and thereby participating in the creation of a preserved collective emotional history.

I actually think I like this sound of this place.

what josh found: do gooder art

Once again I have to thank my good friend Josh for turning my attention to a great website. For this installment of what I am now going to start calling "what Josh found" I/we bring you Wants For Sale, which is the joint project of artists Justin Gignac and Christine Santora. Here they present their wants depicted as paintings. As they say...

At Wants For Sale we make paintings of things that we want and then sell them for the price of the real item. So a painting of "A Slice of Pepperoni" costs you $3.00 while "Dinner at Nobu" costs $152.00. After the painting sells we go out and buy the item.

The artwork does not end there as you can take a quick click over to the sister site Needs for Sale. Here similar paintings are created however in this instance represent items for charity groups, and all profits go to the correlating cause.

And if you haven't quite satiated your desire for offbeat art you can journey over to New York City Garbage where you can buy a little piece of NYC's best trash, bundled up in an attractive clear cube.

Last, if you would like a glimpse of works that have sold you can go to their Flickr site.

lazy texas and the atlantic food douche

I don't typically waste my breath spewing grouchiness about some random dude's opinions but I guess every now again I can break my rule. The Austinist posted an article directing attention to a recent story on The Atlantic which discussed the writer's viewpoints on Austin's sidewalk vendors vs. restaurants, specifically (I guess) in terms of being employed with immigrants and not regulated by the health department. I'm sure his one visit to one vendor made him an expert. Anyway what really got me riled up, aside from his confusing and in my view unfocused ramblings was the statement below (click on it to enlarge if you can't read it).
I can get behind freedom of speech but... A) You're a jerk B) Tell me again, what was the point of this article. C) It was definitely not to say anything educated but if it was to sound like a pretentious blowhard, done and done. Ok, I'm better now. Forgive the mini-tirade.

greatbook?

I have been following Lamebook for a few weeks now and it has some pretty funny revelations on the lameness of the human race, all via Facebook. Mean spirited or genius? You decide.

tee time: sxsw

SXSW is finally over and I have to say that I'm pretty glad. It was a lot of fun from a patron point of view, and educational from a volunteer point of view, but was also exhausting, dirty, and tested my threshold for invaded personal space and crazy strangers. I am certain I could not keep up with the pace if this lasted more than a week and a half.

I am slowly but surely uploading the photos I took and am beginning the laborious task of editing and converting. It's not something I relish so has been easy to drag my feet. I also plan to comment on a few of the amazing things that I saw and enjoyed. The lazy person that I sometimes I am, I am falling back on the organizing my thoughts excuse.

Here is a halfhearted attempt at a side project as I needed a break from my dictated assignments. There were so many folks that passed my line of vision. No doubt, festivals are a great place for people watching. One thing there was no shortage of were t-shirts, namely typographic t's. Everyone has a message, accidentally or intentionally... ironically or literally. In this endeavor to be a word collector I failed with my follow through but learned that another word for thesaurus is lexicon.

P.S. One guy is clearly not wearing a type tee but he REALLY wanted to show me his tattoo and i figured it's type, why not.

i love you more than...

Do you need a little sweetness in your life? If yes, then I recommend going over to I Love You More Than Blank and take a gander at the array of love notes on display. You can also play along and submit your own idea to love@paperwhite-studio.com.

Some standouts to me:
  • ...more than taking pictures
  • ...more than I did 20 years ago
  • ...more than he ever could have
  • ...more than everything combined

  • I think I might be a little upset if someone told me they loved me more than Facebook. Really? I should hope so.

    encouraging words

Two of my favorite design/photo websites, Booooooom! and Design for Mankind have come together to bring us all a little encouragement. The idea is a simple one; the project calls for folks to submit a few positive words to help combat the negativity we are constantly facing. Submissions are now closed but you can take a look at the massive amount of entries which have been posted for a little pick me up. Sorry, no "hang in there" cat on a limb posters included.

    touching too much

There is a major problem on the horizon. I think America is on the verge of a touch epidemic/all-out-meltdown. I'm not sure if anyone else has the "touch, touch, touch... feel" Kleenex commercial burned in their mind like I do. I am attracted to the ad when I pretend that it's a PSA for folks dealing with ritual OCD behaviors, which is not a stretch of the imagination, and would actually be really awesome. But realizing over and over again that it's not I am repeatedly repelled by the sound of it, as if cycling through some very sterile and neurotic Ground Hog Day.

Look all around and you really can't escape the fingertip revolution. Facial tissue is a mere fraction of what's afoot. Of course I'm not talking about tenderness or physical expressions of love or desire; that would be weird. Where the action is, the cool, glassy canvas of technology awaits. Everything works better, looks better, is better there. And gosh darn it if I'm not trotting gleefully right along in being mesmerized, even if it makes me feel wrong, even if it's an expensive place to be.

But you know what, is Kleenex onto something? Are they the new AT&T ("reach out and touch someone")? Is their advertising campaign a thinly veiled message urging us to just slow down and FEEL (especially their tissue)? Has Sergeant IPod and its minions somehow fractured human interaction? I never knew blowing my nose could be so New Age, and so liberating. Deliberate or not, reading between the lines might not be a bad idea. Translate however you wish. And for God sake if I could perhaps not hear the word "touch" for a day that may be enough to make it all better, and this whole touchy feely vs touchy steely debate will be moot.

    the end of the day

Fifty People, One Question: Restored from Benjamin Reece on Vimeo.

I seem to have a nice little theme running here and that is, people, tell me what's on your mind. This time the revelation is an answer to "what would you wish for by the end of the day?" I'm currently wishing my house would magically be put together once and for all. That's admittedly a very, very lame wish but I have been working on it forever now so I think it's the monotony talking. I need to try again when I have less of a one track mind. What would you wish for?

    andy is so wise

Andy Rooney has always and will always be such a ray of sunshine. Here are is friendly, happy thoughts on public art. Please, let's be friends. I'm sure we would be besties.

Speaking of Mr. Rooney I thought this video of him and Ali G was pretty funny. He's so patient and likable. And yes, I'm talking about Puppet "I have 50 books on the English language" Brows.
